A residential roofing system has five main layers. There’s the roof deck, underlayment, ice and water shield in vulnerable spots, the roof covering itself, and ventilation components that manage airflow underneath it all. Each layer does a specific job. Skip or shortcut any one of them, and it shortens the life of everything above it.
Most homeowners only ever see the top layer, the shingles. Everything that actually protects the house sits underneath, invisible until something fails. Here’s what’s really in a roofing system, starting from the bottom.
The Roof Deck: Structural Base for Everything Else
The roof deck is the structural base every other layer attaches to. On most homes, it’s plywood or oriented strand board, nailed directly to the roof framing. It gives the whole assembly its structural support and stability. Everything above the deck, from underlayment to shingles to flashing, depends on that deck being solid and properly fastened.
Deck condition matters more than most homeowners realize during a roof replacement. Soft spots, rot, or delamination in the decking have to get addressed before anything else goes on. Nailing new roofing material into a compromised deck just doesn’t hold, no matter how good the shingles above it are. This is exactly the kind of problem a professional inspection catches before a tear-off starts, not after.
Underlayment: The Roof’s Secondary Drainage Plane
Roofing underlayment goes down directly on the deck, before the shingles. It acts as a secondary drainage plane, a backup layer that catches and directs moisture away if wind-driven rain or an ice dam gets past the shingles above it. Underlayment used to mean asphalt-saturated felt almost exclusively. Synthetic underlayment has largely replaced it on newer installs. It resists tearing better and holds up to job-site foot traffic before the shingles go on.
How much underlayment a roof needs depends on its pitch. Roofs at 4:12 slope or steeper need only a single layer, overlapped a minimum of 2 inches per course. Roofs between 2:12 and 4:12 sit in the low-slope range, where asphalt shingles are still permitted, but only with two layers of underlayment. The top course needs a minimum 19-inch overlap in that range. Below 2:12, asphalt shingles aren’t allowed under any building code. That pitch simply doesn’t shed water fast enough for shingles to work. IRC Chapter 9 spells out these underlayment requirements in detail, and they’re part of what a proper roof replacement has to follow.
Ice and Water Shield: Extra Protection Where It Counts
Ice and water shield is a self-adhering waterproof membrane. Installers place it in the roof’s most vulnerable spots: along the eaves, in valleys, and around chimneys and vent penetrations. Unlike standard underlayment, it seals around nail penetrations and creates a fully watertight barrier. That matters most exactly where water tends to back up.
In New Jersey, ice and water shield along the eaves stands between a normal winter and an ice dam finding its way inside. Meltwater refreezes at the roof edge and has nowhere to go but under the shingles. Ice and water shield is the layer built to stop it there, before it reaches the deck.
Roof Covering: The Outermost Layer
The roof covering, asphalt shingles on most New Jersey homes, is the outermost layer and the one everyone actually sees. It also takes the most direct weather exposure. UV, wind, hail, and temperature swings all hit the shingles first. GAF architectural shingles are built with multiple layers of their own: a fiberglass mat base, an asphalt coating, and mineral granules on top. Each layer plays a role in shedding water while resisting UV breakdown.
Drip edge and flashing work alongside the shingles at the roof’s edges and penetrations. Drip edge directs water off the roof edge and into the gutter. Flashing redirects water away from vulnerable intersections like chimneys, skylights, and valleys. Flashing failure is one of the leading causes of roof leaks that have nothing to do with the shingles themselves.
Ridge Caps and Ventilation: Managing Airflow
Ridge cap shingles run along the roof’s peak. They seal the ridge vent underneath while still letting air escape. That ridge vent works together with soffit and intake vents lower on the roof to create balanced airflow through the attic: cool air comes in low, warm moist air goes out high.
Proper ventilation isn’t cosmetic. It regulates attic temperature and reduces moisture buildup, and both directly affect how long the roof covering lasts. A roof baking under trapped summer heat ages faster than one that vents properly. A roof holding onto winter moisture is more prone to ice dams and deck rot. Getting ventilation right depends on choosing a contractor who calculates it properly for your attic, not one who eyeballs it.
How Many Layers Does a Roof System Actually Have?
A typical residential roofing system has four to five functional layers: deck, underlayment, ice and water shield where needed, roof covering, and ventilation components. That’s the standard stack on most New Jersey homes with an asphalt shingle roof.
Flat and low-slope commercial roofs work differently. It’s worth knowing the difference exists, even if it’s not what’s on your house. Commercial flat roofs typically use single-ply membranes like TPO or PVC, modified bitumen, or older built-up roofing systems with layers of tar and gravel. A flat roof assembly can run three to six total layers, including insulation and a cover board. These systems solve a different problem. With little to no slope, the membrane itself has to handle water, rather than gravity and shingle overlap the way a pitched residential roof does it.
