It costs very little to install during a roof replacement. And it’s one of the first things a corner-cutting contractor leaves off a quote to shave a few hundred dollars.
Most homeowners never think about drip edge until something’s gone wrong behind their gutters. By then, water has usually been getting behind the fascia for a while. Here’s what a drip edge actually does, what the code requires, what it costs, and why some roofers still skip it.
What Is a Drip Edge, and What Does It Actually Do?
A drip edge is a strip of metal, usually aluminum or galvanized steel, that installers place at the roof’s edge before the shingles go on. Water runs off the shingles and hits the drip edge. From there it drops straight into the gutter, instead of clinging to the fascia board and running down behind it.
That’s the whole job, but it matters more than the simple description suggests. Without a drip edge, water finds its way under the shingles at the roof’s edge. From there it reaches the fascia, and eventually the roof deck itself. We often find rot at the eaves and rake edges on older homes. Usually the drip edge is missing entirely, or someone installed it wrong.
Drip edge also gives shingles a firm, straight edge to sit on. Without it, the outermost row of shingles has nothing solid underneath. That leads to curling and cracking well before the rest of the roof shows wear.
Is a Drip Edge Required on a Roof in New Jersey?
Yes. IRC Section R905.2.8.5 is part of the International Residential Code, which New Jersey’s building code adopts. It has required drip edge on shingle roofs at both eaves and rake edges since the 2012 edition. The code spells out the specifics. Adjacent sections of drip edge need at least 2 inches of overlap. The drip edge itself has to extend at least 2 inches back onto the roof deck. And fasteners can’t sit more than 12 inches apart.
GAF’s own installation guidance goes a step further for its certified roofs. Fasteners should sit every 8 to 10 inches, tighter than the code minimum. Shingles need to overhang the drip edge by 3/8 to 3/4 inch to shed water properly without cracking off in wind. If you’re working with a GAF Master Elite contractor installing GAF architectural shingles, that’s the spec they follow, not just the code minimum.
How Drip Edge Installation Actually Works
The sequence matters, and it’s different at eaves versus rakes:
- Drip edge goes on at the eaves first, before the underlayment.
- Installers add underlayment over the eave drip edge next.
- At the rake edges, the order flips: underlayment goes down first, and the drip edge goes on top of it.
- Each section overlaps the next by at least 2 inches.
- Fasteners go in every 8 to 12 inches, depending on whether you’re following code minimum or manufacturer spec.
- Installers trim shingles to overhang the drip edge by roughly half an inch, directing water off the roof instead of behind it.
Drip edge typically comes in 10.5-foot lengths. Installers cut it to fit with tin snips at corners and valleys. On a full roof replacement, this is part of the existing workflow, since the crew already has the roof deck open. Retrofitting drip edge onto an existing roof is a different story. A flat pry bar has to lift the bottom row of shingles without cracking them. That takes real time and skill, and the cost reflects it.
Drip Edge Materials: What’s Actually Used
Aluminum is the standard choice on most residential roofs. It’s lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and inexpensive relative to the protection it provides. Galvanized steel is a step up in durability and holds up well under heavy snow load, though it costs more than aluminum. Copper is the premium option. It develops a distinctive patina over time and lasts decades, but the material cost is a significant jump, one most homeowners reserve for historic homes or high-end projects.
Plastic and vinyl versions exist too, mostly for window and door trim rather than roofing. They can’t handle the temperature swings and structural demands of a roof edge the way metal does. We don’t recommend them for that application.
Why Cheap Roofers Skip It
Here’s the part that should bother homeowners more than it does: drip edge is genuinely inexpensive. Material runs roughly $0.50 to $1.00 per linear foot for standard aluminum. Installing it during a full roof replacement adds about $1 to $3 per linear foot total once you count labor, since the crew and equipment are already there. On a typical 200-foot home, that’s somewhere around $300 to $600 total, a small fraction of a $5,000 to $15,000 roof replacement.
That’s exactly why skipping it doesn’t make sense from a cost standpoint, and exactly why it still happens. A contractor trying to win a bid on price alone can shave a few hundred dollars off a quote by leaving drip edge out, or by using an inadequate substitute instead. Most homeowners have no way to spot the omission once the shingles are down and the roof looks finished. GAF’s own technical guidance is direct on this point: L-metal alone isn’t a suitable substitute for proper drip edge, whatever a contractor might claim.
The math only looks good for the contractor. For the homeowner, skipping a $300 to $600 line item now risks fascia rot and roof deck damage. It also risks a much larger repair bill later, plus the cost of retrofitting drip edge properly after the fact, which runs three to five times higher per foot than doing it right the first time. A professional inspection is usually the only way to catch a missing or badly installed drip edge before it causes real damage. That’s one more reason choosing the right contractor upfront matters more than chasing the lowest quote.
Drip Edge vs. Roof Flashing: What’s the Difference?
Drip edge is a type of flashing, but not all flashing is drip edge. Flashing is the broader category. It covers any metal component that directs water away from a vulnerable point on the roof, including valleys, chimneys, vent pipes, and skylights. Drip edge specifically means the flashing at the roof’s outer edges, the eaves and rakes, where the roof meets open air rather than another surface like a wall or chimney.
Both do the same fundamental job: keeping water where it belongs. But they sit at different points on the roof and solve different problems. A roof missing valley flashing and a roof missing drip edge fail in different ways, even though both are flashing failures at their core.
What Can You Use Instead of a Drip Edge?
Nothing that actually does the job as well. Some contractors use plain L-shaped metal, or they extend the roofing felt past the fascia as a workaround. Neither meets code, and neither performs the way proper drip edge does over time. A gutter apron is a wider drip-edge profile with an extended leading edge. Installers sometimes use it specifically for retrofit situations, since it can tuck up under existing shingles without a full tear-off. That’s still a form of drip edge, though, not a substitute for one.
If your roof doesn’t currently have drip edge and you’re not doing a full replacement, ask your contractor directly whether a retrofit gutter-apron style drip edge will work on your existing roof. It usually does, at a higher per-foot cost than doing it during a full roof replacement. It’s still worth doing rather than leaving the edge unprotected.
