How to Prevent Ice Dams

Ice dams occur when heat trapped in your attic rapidly melts the snow on your roof and the resulting water trickles down and refreezes at the eaves of your roof (gutter line). Water pools up against the ice dam, and can penetrate beneath your shingles and roof deck causing an interior leak.

Your chance of having ice dams increases if your attic is not adequately ventilated or insulated properly. Resulting damage leads to costly repairs to roofing, siding, gutters, fascia, and interior walls, as well as damage that might not be immediately visible, such as saturated insulation and mold growth.

A “roof rake” can be purchased from home goods suppliers and when used properly, can reduce the burdening effects of snow on your roof. Depending on the age and condition of your roof, a roof rake might not be adequate. Once the snow is packed down, using a roof rake to force ice off the roof will damage your shingles and gutters.
